TRU NUT BUTTER

Many people today are familiar with the vast array of different nut butters that exist within the marketplace. Whether it be peanut butter, almond butter, or some other delectable spread—nut butters are held in high regard when it comes to sandwich spreads.

Hi, I’m Sean Torbati. Like many other people I have experienced a profound love for peanut butter dating back to my childhood. As a young stud I can still recall my mother packing up PB&J sandwiches and sending me off to my days as an elementary school student. Age and maturity has brought forth a better understanding of nut butters. Today I am able to discern the good and bad ingredients associated with nut butters.

Let’s take a look at the history of nut butters that exist within our culture today, where they came from, and what individuals should know about various types of nut butters.

The History of Nut Butters

Whether you consider yourself a fan of crunchy or smooth peanut butter—it’s always had a proper place within American culture. Peanut butter dates back to Aztec times when roasted peanuts were filtered into a paste. Although George Washington Carver is often credited as the inventor of peanut butter—three other individuals actually brought forth it’s existence.

In 1884 Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Canada created the patent for peanut paste—which is the finished product created from milling roasted peanuts between two heated surfaces. In 1895 Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (the founder of Kellogg’s) designed a process for creating peanut butter using raw nuts. The product was originally created to be a healthy protein substitute for individuals without teeth. Joseph Rosefield invented a process for making peanut butter smooth with the use of hydrogenated oil in 1928.

Here’s some interesting peanut butter facts you might not be aware of:

  • Peanuts are actually legumes, not nuts
  • The United States ranks as the third largest producer of peanuts behind both China and India
  • Over half of all peanuts grown in the United States are used for the sole purpose of making peanut butter
  • A normal sized 12-ounce jar of peanut butter requires using over 540 peanuts
  • Children typically consumer over 1,500 PB&J sandwiches prior to graduating from high school

Peanut butter has retained a space within American culture and society for decades. You would be hard pressed to find many non-allergic individuals who don’t enjoy the pleasures and tastes associated with peanut butter.

The Dark Side of Peanut Butter

Although many consider peanut butter to be part of a healthy diet—the truth of the matter is some nut butters contain ingredients that can be detrimental to your health. Prior to 2018 many companies added processed ingredients such as hydrogenated oils and fats. After 2018 the FDA required these fats be removed from all products.

Many manufacturers utilized trans fats in peanut butters to help keep them from separating. Foods containing high amounts of trans fats may result in higher bad cholesterol (LDL) and lower good cholesterol (HDL) levels.

Other ingredients found in many nut butters include:

  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Trans fats
  • Added sugars
  • Fake flavoring

Peanut butter is a tasty and delectable spread that can go on nearly anything. The problem is that it can be difficult to find a healthy peanut butter product that is free of harmful ingredients and additives. Until today—where I am happy to introduce you to TRU Nut Butter.
