What are the Health Benefits of Cinnamon?

Jun 13, 2022Ryan Rodal

You can put it in your coffee or make it into a multitude of different recipes—that’s right I’m talking about coffee. Often found as a key ingredient, cinnamon is a flavorful ingredient that can be incorporated into pastries, pies and even cakes. Although it can add flavor and spice up many types of foods, you might be unaware of the health benefits associated with cinnamon.

That’s right, cinnamon can also be beneficial to many aspects of your overall health. Its integral medicinal properties make it a common ingredient that is both cheap and effective.

Let’s take a closer look at cinnamon and how it can also benefit your health in numerous ways.

What is Cinnamon?

Cinnamon is a spice that’s origins can be traced back thousands of years. Imported into Egypt from China—cinnamon was originally considered a highly prized item among ancient nations and was even a gift for monarchs and kings at one point in time or another. The source of cinnamon at one point was kept a trade secret throughout the Mediterranean world for several centuries in order to establish a monopoly on its production.

Did you know that over 98% of the world production of cinnamon comes from four countries: Indonesia, China, Vietnam and Sri Lanka?

Cinnamon is composed of 11% water, 81% carbohydrates, 4% protein and 1% fat. It also is a rich source of Calcium, Iron and Vitamin K. We’ll dive into the basics of cinnamon and how it can be a critical ingredient for improving various aspects of your health.

The Types of Cinnamon

Many people are unaware that there’s actually multiple types of cinnamon and it's not a one-size-fits all type of situation. The two main types of cinnamon are:

  • Ceylon cinnamon: this is known as the truest, purest form of cinnamon. It’s found in a small evergreen tree belonging to the family Lauraceae native to Sri Lanka.
  • Cassia cinnamon: this is the most common type of cinnamon found in many ingredients and products of today.

The main differences between each type of cinnamon is that the Ceylon variety is more expensive and difficult to find. Coming from the bark of cinnamon trees, Ceylon is healthy and delicious. Cassia cinnamon on the other hand originates in southern China and is widely cultivated throughout South and Southeast Asia. Cassia cinnamon also has a stronger flavor and is prepared from the dried inner bark of an evergreen tree. While both can provide health benefits, Cassia cinnamon is widely known to have better health benefits.

Cinnamon Health Benefits

Some of the most common health benefits of cinnamon are that it’s loaded with antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory properties, can reduce the risk of heart disease and may even help to lower blood sugar.

  • Antioxidants: cinnamon is loaded with free radicals including polyphenols (1)
  • Anti-inflammatory properties: cinnamon can help the body fight off infections and even repair tissue damage (2)
  • May reduce risk of heart disease: cinnamon has been shown to help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower levels of bad LDL cholesterol (3)
  • May lower blood sugar: cinnamon has been shown to decrease the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream after a meal (4)

At the end of the day cinnamon is a healthy and beneficial spice that can improve the taste of your food while simultaneously helping to improve various aspects of your health.
